How to Care for your Bucida Buceras (Black Olive Tree)

The Bucida Buceras, also known as the Black Olive Tree, is a dramatic, architectural houseplant beloved for its dark, dense foliage and sleek, upward growth. Native to the Caribbean and parts of Central America, it’s commonly seen in coastal landscapes—but it also makes a statement indoors with the right care.

Whether you’re growing yours in a gallery, loft, or sun-drenched living room, this guide covers everything you need to help it thrive for decades.

Light Requirements

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal. A south or west-facing window works best.

  • Can tolerate full sun once acclimated, but avoid harsh direct rays when newly introduced to your space.

Watering Schedule

  • Growing season (Spring–Fall): Water every 7–10 days

  • Dormant season (Winter): Water every 3–4 weeks

  • Always let the top 2 inches of soil dry out between waterings.

How Much to Water

  • For a 10”–12” container, start with 12–16 oz (350–475 ml)

  • Water slowly and evenly until it begins draining out the bottom.

  • Reduce watering if you notice yellowing leaves or soil that stays wet.

Fertilizer Tips

  • Use a balanced houseplant fertilizer (like 10-10-10)

  • Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during growing season

  • Hold off entirely in winter

Trimming & Pruning

  • Lightly prune 2–3x per year to shape and remove leggy growth

  • Wear gloves—this plant may ooze sap that can be mildly irritating

Common Issues

  • Brown leaf tips: Low humidity or salt buildup in soil

  • Sparse leaves: Not enough light

  • Pests: Watch for spider mites or scale—use neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed

Repotting Notes

  • Repot every 2–3 years in a well-draining soil mix

  • Choose a pot 2” larger in diameter than the current one

  • Be gentle—roots can be sensitive to overhandling

Lifespan & Growth

With proper care, the Bucida Buceras can live for 50–100 years, making it a true heirloom plant. Indoors, it can reach 6–10 feet tall in time, depending on its container and light exposure.
