Ferns are among the oldest living plant groups on earth — they predate flowering plants by hundreds of millions of years and have been growing in humid, shaded forest environments far longer than most of the species in our collection have existed. That evolutionary history defines their care requirements: they want what forests provide — consistent moisture, indirect light, ambient humidity, and stable temperatures.
What unites all fern varietals is that shared preference for moisture and consistency. Unlike most of our collection, ferns should never be allowed to dry out completely. They are not drought-tolerant. They do not benefit from extended dry periods. They want even, reliable moisture and will tell you quickly and visibly when they're not getting it.
Within that shared framework, different varietals have meaningfully different characters — form, light tolerance, humidity requirements, and placement preferences. The variety guide below covers the most common species you'll find with us.
Shared Care — All Varietals
Boston Fern
Nephrolepis exaltataThe classic indoor fern. Long, arching fronds that cascade in a full, symmetrical form — ideal for elevated planters, stands, or hanging positions. The most humidity-demanding of the common varietals; fronds crisp quickly in dry air. Thrives in bright indirect light and needs consistently moist soil.
Highest humidity needs of the group. Most rewarding with a humidifier nearby.
Kimberly Queen Fern
Nephrolepis obliterataA more upright, structured relative of the Boston Fern with narrower, more defined fronds and a tidier overall form. More tolerant of outdoor conditions and less prone to frond drop when moved. Handles slightly lower humidity than the Boston without as much visible stress — a practical choice for entryways and sheltered outdoor positions.
More forgiving than Boston in lower humidity. Good for outdoor/covered patios.
Bird's Nest Fern
Asplenium nidusDramatically different from other ferns — broad, undivided strap-like fronds that emerge from a central rosette in a tight whorl, resembling a bird's nest. Lower humidity requirements than the Boston or Kimberly Queen. Tolerates moderate interior conditions well. Water carefully into the potting medium, not into the central rosette — trapped moisture there can cause rot.
Do not water into the central crown. Most tolerant of lower humidity of the common varietals.
Staghorn Fern
Platycerium spp.An epiphytic fern that grows mounted on wood or bark in its natural habitat — not in soil. It has two types of fronds: flat, rounded shield fronds that anchor it to its mount and protect the roots, and the dramatic, antler-like fertile fronds that give it its name. Mount on a board, water by soaking, and never remove the brown shield fronds — they are functional, not dead.
Epiphytic — mounts on wood, not soil. Water by soaking the root mass. Never remove shield fronds.
Maidenhair Fern
Adiantum spp.The most delicate and demanding fern in common cultivation. Extremely fine, fan-shaped leaflets on wiry black stems create a gossamer, almost weightless texture. Beautiful when thriving — unforgiving when conditions slip even slightly. Needs consistently moist soil, very high humidity, no direct sun, no drafts, and no inconsistency of any kind. Ideal for terrariums or humid bathrooms.
The most demanding varietal. Best in a terrarium or dedicated humid enclosure. Not for dry interiors.
Autumn Fern
Dryopteris erythrosoraA more robust and cold-tolerant fern valued for the coppery-orange color of its new fronds — particularly striking in spring when fresh growth pushes in warm tones before maturing to deep green. More forgiving of cooler temperatures and lower humidity than tropical varietals. Works well in shaded outdoor positions and is a strong choice for covered patios or sheltered garden areas.
Most cold-tolerant varietal. Orange-tinted new fronds. Good for shaded outdoor and semi-sheltered positions.
Light
Ferns evolved in forest understories — naturally shaded environments with bright, diffuse light filtering through a canopy above. Indoors, this translates to bright indirect light — a well-lit room where strong illumination fills the space without harsh direct sun falling on the foliage. An east-facing window or a position several feet from a south-facing window is the typical ideal.
Most fern varietals tolerate moderate interior light better than most of our other species, making them useful for positions that would be too dim for plants like Ficus or Schefflera. However, too little light leads to sparse, etiolated growth and faded frond color over time. Bright indirect is the sweet spot — never harsh direct sun, which scorches the delicate fronds, and never deep shade, which produces thin, weak growth.
Staghorn exception: Staghorn ferns tolerate and even appreciate more light than most ferns — including filtered direct morning sun. Their mounting position often naturally gives them more light exposure than potted ferns receive.
Watering
This is the most fundamental difference between ferns and most other plants in our collection: ferns must never fully dry out. They are not drought-tolerant. They do not benefit from extended dry periods. Their root systems are fine, dense, and relatively shallow — evolved for consistently moist forest soils, not the cycle of deep drying and rehydration that works for succulents, cacti, or most tropical trees.
Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly until the medium is evenly hydrated throughout. In practice this usually means watering every four to seven days depending on pot size, light, and humidity. Check the soil regularly — if it feels dry more than an inch below the surface, the plant is already stressed.
Water evenly and slowly so the entire root zone hydrates. Avoid letting water pool in the crown of the plant — for Bird's Nest Ferns especially, water directed into the central rosette can cause rot at the growing point.
Staghorn watering: Mounted Staghorns are watered differently — submerge the mount in water for 10–20 minutes until the root mass is fully saturated, then allow to drain and dry partially before the next soak. Frequency varies with environment — every 1–2 weeks in most interiors, more in summer, less in winter.
Humidity
Humidity is where most people underestimate what ferns need. The standard advice to "mist occasionally" is inadequate — occasional misting briefly raises local humidity for minutes before the air dries again, and is not a substitute for ambient moisture in the air at 50% or above. For most ferns, and especially for the Boston Fern and Maidenhair, a humidifier running nearby is the single most impactful improvement you can make.
Without adequate humidity, the symptoms are specific and consistent: frond tips brown and crisp progressively inward, new growth unfurls poorly or desiccates before it can open, and the plant develops a generally tired, diminished appearance regardless of how carefully it is watered. Good soil moisture alone cannot compensate for dry air — the fronds lose moisture through their surfaces faster than the roots can supply it.
Best placements for humidity: Bathrooms with natural light are often excellent for ferns — the regular moisture from showers creates naturally elevated ambient humidity. Kitchens near sinks work similarly. Grouping ferns together with other humidity-loving plants creates a localized microclimate that benefits all of them.
Temperature & Placement
Most indoor fern varietals prefer stable temperatures between 60–80°F. They are sensitive to cold drafts, temperature fluctuations, and forced air from heating and cooling systems — all of which rapidly desiccate the fronds and cause tip browning even when the soil is adequately moist.
Keep ferns away from air conditioning vents, heating radiators, exterior doors, and uninsulated windows in winter. Stability of temperature matters as much as the temperature itself — a consistent 65°F with no drafts is significantly better than an average of 68°F with regular cold spikes from a drafty window.
The Autumn Fern and Kimberly Queen are more cold-tolerant than the tropical varietals and can handle positions that would stress a Boston or Maidenhair. The Maidenhair is the most temperature-sensitive of the group and does best in consistently warm, still environments.
Fertilizing
Feed lightly through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength — once a month is sufficient. Ferns are not heavy feeders and respond poorly to over-fertilizing: too much nitrogen produces soft, weak fronds that are more prone to pest pressure and browning, and salt accumulation in the consistently moist soil can cause root damage over time.
Pause feeding in fall and winter when growth naturally slows. Resume in early spring as new fronds begin to push. If you notice white crystalline deposits forming on the soil surface, flush the container thoroughly with plain water before the next fertilizing session to clear accumulated salts.
Pruning & Grooming
Fern maintenance is primarily grooming rather than pruning. Remove browning or fully dead fronds at the base — cut cleanly where the stem meets the crown or rhizome. Trim damaged or crispy frond tips cleanly if aesthetics matter, though the underlying cause (usually humidity or moisture inconsistency) should be addressed at the same time.
Never cut healthy green fronds — they are actively photosynthesizing and removing them weakens the plant. Do not cut back the plant aggressively as you might prune a shrub. Ferns regenerate from the crown and rhizome, and heavy removal of healthy growth disrupts the plant's energy balance significantly.
Staghorn shield fronds: The flat, brown, papery fronds at the base of a Staghorn are shield fronds — a functional structure that protects the roots and collects organic matter. Never remove them, even when they turn brown. Cutting shield fronds exposes the roots and severely compromises the plant's health.
Soil & Repotting
Ferns need a soil that retains consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged — a balance achieved with a quality indoor potting mix amended with a small amount of perlite for aeration. Unlike succulents, ferns should not be in a fast-draining gritty mix — they need the medium to hold moisture between waterings. But they also cannot sit in compacted, dense soil that holds excess water and reduces airflow to the roots.
Repot every one to two years, or when roots begin to circle the container or emerge from drainage holes. Spring is the right window. Move up one pot size at a time — an oversized pot holds more moisture than the root system can use and creates soggy conditions that promote root rot. After repotting, maintain consistent moisture and hold off on fertilizing for four to six weeks.
For Staghorn ferns, repotting means remounting — replacing the organic material (sphagnum moss, coco coir) packed around the root mass on the mount, or moving to a larger backing board as the plant grows.
Common Issues
Crispy Frond Tips
The most common fern complaint. Almost always caused by low humidity, drafts, or inconsistent watering that allows the soil to dry too far. Address the root cause — improve humidity first, then review watering consistency. Trim the crispy tips cleanly but the new growth will only look better if the environment improves.
Yellowing Fronds
Usually overwatering or soil that stays too wet for too long — the roots are suffocating in saturated medium. Allow the top inch or two to dry before watering and check that drainage is adequate. Some lower frond yellowing as the plant pushes new growth is natural and not a concern.
Drooping or Wilting Fronds
The plant is too dry — the root system cannot supply moisture fast enough to keep the fronds turgid. Water immediately and thoroughly. If the fronds don't recover within a few hours of watering, check for root rot — prolonged dryness sometimes causes root damage that prevents recovery even after rehydration.
Sparse or Thin Growth
Insufficient light over time. Move to a brighter position — not direct sun, but meaningfully more indirect light than it currently receives. Also check whether the plant is rootbound and overdue for repotting, which limits nutrient access and slows frond production.
Fungus Gnats
Small flies emerging from consistently moist soil — a common companion to ferns. Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings (the limit for ferns) to discourage larvae. Treat with a diluted neem oil soil drench or sticky yellow traps for adults. Avoid overwatering, which creates the saturated conditions fungus gnats prefer.
Spider Mites & Scale
Spider mites thrive in dry conditions — their presence on ferns is often a sign that ambient humidity is too low. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap and increase humidity. Scale appears as small bumps on frond stems — treat the same way. Good airflow and adequate humidity are the most effective long-term deterrents.
Growth & Longevity
Ferns grow steadily in good conditions, producing layers of finely divided fronds that add a quality of softness and organic movement that few other plants can match. They are not statement plants in the way that a Quiver Tree or Schefflera Amate is — their contribution to a space is textural and atmospheric, a counterpoint to harder, more architectural specimens.
Well-cared-for ferns are genuinely long-lived indoor plants. The key is consistency above all else — consistent moisture, consistent humidity, consistent temperature, consistent light. The ferns that decline are almost always the ones kept in environments that fluctuate: a dry winter heated space, a drafty corner, a pot that alternates between soggy and bone dry. Give them stability, and they give you softness and movement for years.
