How to Care for your Dracaena Reflexa (Song of India)

The Dracaena Reflexa, also known as Song of India, is a striking tropical plant known for its vibrant green and yellow variegated leaves. With its sculptural form and low-maintenance care needs, it adds an exotic, textural feel to interiors and does especially well in bright rooms with filtered light.

It’s an ideal option for someone who wants a bold look without high-maintenance demands.

Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect light for best variegation

  • Can adapt to medium light, but colors may fade

  • Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch leaves

Watering Schedule

  • Spring to Fall: Every 10–14 days, when top 1–2" of soil are dry

  • Winter: Every 3–4 weeks

  • Keep soil evenly moist but never soggy

How Much to Water

  • For an 8–10” pot, water with 5–7 oz (150–210 ml)

  • Drain excess water thoroughly

  • Use a pot with proper drainage to prevent root rot

Fertilizer Tips

  • Fertilize once a month during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer

  • Skip feeding during fall and winter

Trimming & Pruning

  • Remove yellow or dead leaves at the base

  • You can prune to control height or encourage bushier growth

  • Trim just above leaf nodes for new shoots

Common Issues

  • Brown tips: Often due to fluoride in tap water—use filtered or distilled

  • Yellow leaves: Usually from overwatering

  • Leaf drop: May be a sign of low light or sudden temperature changes

Repotting Notes

  • Repot every 2–3 years, or when rootbound

  • Use a well-draining indoor potting mix

  • Spring is the best time to repot

Lifespan & Growth

With good care, Dracaena Reflexa can live for decades and grow up to 6–8 feet tall indoors. It grows slowly but rewards you with year-round tropical color and structure.
