How to Care for Your Ficus Audrey (Ficus Benghalensis)

The Ficus Audrey, known for its velvety matte leaves and pale trunk, is a refined, low-fuss alternative to the more common rubber tree. Native to India, where it’s celebrated as a sacred tree, the Audrey brings an understated elegance to interiors. With proper care, it can become a bold, sculptural focal point that grows beautifully over time.

Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect light

  • Can tolerate some direct sun, especially morning light

  • Avoid dim spaces—low light will lead to sparse growth and leaf drop

Watering Schedule

  • Spring to Fall: Every 7–10 days, or when the top 2–3" of soil are dry

  • Winter: Every 2–3 weeks, allowing soil to dry deeper between waterings

  • Let excess water drain completely; never let it sit in standing water

How Much to Water

  • For a 10–12” pot, use 10–12 oz (300–350 ml) of water

  • Water evenly around the base until you see slow drainage

  • Use your finger or a moisture meter to check below the surface before watering

Fertilizer Tips

  • Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer

  • Skip feeding during the fall and winter months

  • Avoid over-fertilizing, which can burn the roots

Trimming & Pruning

  • Prune to shape or control size as needed

  • Cut just above leaf nodes to encourage bushier growth

  • Remove any yellow or damaged leaves as they appear

Common Issues

  • Drooping or yellow leaves: Often a sign of overwatering or root stress

  • Leaf drop: Can occur after relocation or sudden changes in light

  • Dusty leaves: Wipe gently with a damp cloth to help with photosynthesis

Repotting Notes

  • Repot every 2–3 years, or when rootbound

  • Use a well-draining soil mix, ideally with some perlite

  • Repot in spring, when the plant is entering its active growth phase

Lifespan & Growth

With good care, a Ficus Audrey can grow over 10 feet tall indoors and live for decades. It develops a striking trunk and branching habit over time, becoming more sculptural as it matures.
